The B.F. and Rose H. Perkins Foundation presented two gifts to the Sheridan College Foundation: $50,000 for the Nursing Program and $50,000 for the Dental Hygiene Program. On January 8, 2010, George Fletcher and Steve Carroll, board members for Perkins Foundation, presented checks to Susan Bigelow, Executive Director for SCF, and Dr. Jon Connolly, Interim President for NWCCD. The Nursing Program grant will be used to increase the use of simulators and simulation in the program. The gift to the Dental Hygiene Program will fund a portable dental chair and supporting units, purchase needed laptop computers for dental care, and addresses rising costs of supplies and equipment. Both gifts are very welcomed by the program leaders and students.

Simulation provides clinical experiences where learning can take place in a safe controlled environment. In rural communities, given the limitations of available clinical settings, simulation is the direction nursing programs are moving for added clinical rotation experiences. Additionally, local industry representatives have provided feedback that educational programs can help hospitals retain their nursing staff by preparing students better in the education setting with more “real world” experiences, critical thinking skills and the ability to multi-task. Simulation will also help us serve more students in each class. – Nursing Program Director Judith McDowell

Dental hygiene schools across the national are struggling to keep up with the rising costs of supplies and equipment. This has become an even more difficult task because of the rapidly advancing medical and dental technology, times of economic limitations, and reduced resources. The financial support from the Perkins Foundation of Sheridan will be an important part of the success of the Sheridan College Dental Hygiene Program. Through your support we will continue to faithfully serve our population and educate dental hygiene students who will be the workforce of the future for our community and surrounding areas. – Dental Hygiene Program Director Jan Dill

The Sheridan Woman’s Club Scholarship was established in 2005 when the Club disbanded and sold their all their assets.

With the proceeds, they established the Sheridan Woman’s Club Scholarship with a $200,658 endowment fund which was matched by the Wyoming State Legislative Endowment Challenge for a total endowed fund of $401,316. The fund is invested and interest income provides scholarships for women attending Sheridan College.

As an organization, Sheridan Woman’s Club no longer exists, but they’ve never lost sight of their purpose or the legacy they established. Their commitment “to stimulate intellectual growth, moral development and to advance the interests of women in Sheridan, Wyoming” and “to better the social, civic, and economic welfare of the community” continues with the establishment of the Sheridan Woman’s Club Scholarship.

NWCCD receives technology gift from Montana Dakota Utilities

Published to site on: August 4th, 2009

Representatives from Montana Dakota Utilities and MDU subsidiary Williston Basin Interstate Pipeline Company on Wednesday delivered a gift of technological training equipment to Sheridan College.

The equipment will be housed in Northern Wyoming Community College District’s Industry Training and Education Center Mobile Training Lab, which is currently parked at Sheridan College, and will provide hands-on learning to students at Sheridan College and Gillette College and industry workers throughout the region.

“We’re giving this equipment to the college so students will have the opportunity to learn how to use the equipment to prepare for their career,” Bret Ketcham, Field Manager with Bitter Creek Pipelines, said. “This is great training equipment that will carry them into our industry.”

The equipment, valued at over $18,000, consists of six Allen Bradley SLC 500’s; four Allen Bradley Panelview 550’s; one Allen Bradley Demonstration Kit (1st Generation Frequency Drive) and two Fisher & Porter single and multiple loop controllers.

“We will use these PLC.s, Panelview 550s and Loop controllers in our Industrial Electrical Programs for the Apprentice Electrician Training classes going on right now in Gillette and in future trainings coming up in Sheridan as well,” Ron Varner, I-TEC instructor, said. “The Fisher-Porter loop controllers will be very useful in our Instrumentation sections of these same trainings. The Frequency drives are also an important part of our Electrical programs and will aid in the Hands-On Trainings we offer now. In all, these will be of extreme value to our program and we send our special thanks to our friends at MDU/WBI.”

“We wish to thank MDU with our greatest appreciation for the recent donation of equipment and support of our electrical program,” Randy Calhoon, I-TEC Director, said. “With donations like these will be able to help train future technicians on field appropriate equipment that will benefit students, industry, and our training facility. Partnerships like this benefit all parties to the fullest extent. Once again we very much appreciate this generous donation.”
